Sanyan wraps an elderly woman entirely in the rare Yoruba wild silk fabric of the same name, from head to floor, and seats her on a low stool against an ivory background so close to her fabric’s own colour that her charcoal skin becomes the only true contrast in the composition. Her hands are folded, her face turned slightly left, her presence absolutely contained. Around her on the floor, loose threads of sanyan spiral outward from her seat in cursive loops, the fabric gently unravelling from her body and writing itself across the floor as if she is being slowly unwound from a spool.
