Lagos Island places a woman in full Victorian-Yoruba Saro returnee dress on the steps of one of Lagos Island’s oldest Brazilian-style buildings at golden hour, one hand resting on an iron railing, her gaze directed at the street rather than the camera. She wears the dress of the nineteenth-century Lagos elite, the hybrid elegance of those who returned from Sierra Leone and Brazil and built the city’s first cosmopolitan identity. Her shadow on the steps behind her is not her shadow. It is the shadow of a traditional Yoruba compound projected onto the colonial steps from a light source that has not existed for two centuries. This layered and historically rich mixed media fine art print is Giclée printed on museum quality 310gsm Textured Fine Art Cotton Rag and limited to just 20 prints worldwide. A landmark Nigerian painting about the city that is always all of its ages at once. Available at Naija Art Store.
