Ijele Descends Red presents the Ijele, the grandest and most sacred of all Igbo masquerades, in a rare intimate composition that finds its power not in towering height but in ceremonial width. The wide circular base skirt of the Ijele radiates outward in layered panels of red, green, gold, and white, and two attendant figures kneel on either side, each holding the outermost panels extended, creating a wide low ceremonial spread across the full frame. The central Ijele figure stands completely still at the composition’s centre. From beneath the circular skirt at ground level, thin gold light leaks outward in all directions, whatever is at the centre lit from within.
