Igba Keji, meaning The Second Gourd, draws from the Yoruba understanding of reincarnation to place two female figures in one composition, one standing and one kneeling, both in matching magenta lace iro and buba. The standing figure wears skull paint in gold, the kneeling figure in silver, two iterations of the same soul at different stages. The standing figure’s hands rest lightly on the kneeling figure’s shoulders from behind, not restraining but guiding, and between those hands on the shoulders, a small glowing orb of warm light rests, the soul in the moment of its passing between one body and the next.
